![]() Animals generally have the following characteristics: Sponges seem to resemble plants more than animals yet sponges fit almost perfectly well into the criteria for an animal. Sponges are in fact considered animals, although at a first glance they do not seem to have any of the traits of an animal. Sponges are invertebrates, a very large, diverse and successful group. Even with these defenses however, they are still vulnerable to fish, turtles and other invertebrates. One of the various defense mechanisms is the fact that the fibres in the skeleton are glass like shards, making the sponge very unappealing to predators. In order to keep off predators, they use certain chemicals in their bodies and other defense mechanisms. On the food chain, the Vase sponges are very low. These sponges can live up to a maximum depth of 20 meters below sea level. These sponges live in area such as the Caribbean, Bahamas and of the coast of Florida. ![]() The sponge never moves since in order to feed it has to rest in place. The Azure Vase sponge’s lifespan can vary between a few months all the way to 20 years depending on the surrounding environment. The colour of the vase varies between sponges and generally stays between the range of pink and purple as well as a light blue fluorescent coating. The sponge can grow up to 27 centimetres and 13 and a half centimetres wide. Its skeletal system is made up of primary, secondary and tertiary interlacing fibres.
